Rhythms for Refugees Benefit
at Bar 303 Northcote
Friday, 25 July 2008

Refugee Action Collective would like to say a big thank you to all performers, organisations and others who donated their time, efforts and resources, and those supporters who came along and made the night a huge success, helping us to raise well over $1,000

The night got started with the film made by Kate Durham and Sara McDonald in 2002 on Australia’s Pacific Solution. The film includes footage from a visit to Nauru, and TV footage from the Tampa and SIEV-X , all of which was chilling and a grim reminder of the shameful policies which Australia has had in place for far too long.

A mix of musicians volunteered their time, making it a great night of music from different genres. There was something for everyone, and the crowd warmed up to dancing as the night went on. Musicians and performers who featured on the night are all pictorially featured below.

Thanks also go to MC Lizzil Gay who kept the program rolling along, with the support of an eye-catching costume, and Steve who assisted with sound.

The Raffle Girls Extraordinaire also added colour and flair, and helped people get their chance in the raffle. Thank you Kerryn and thank you Samantha Lord.

Rachel Evans from Sydney Refugee Action Coalition let us know about the campaigns around detention in NSW, and also the recent ‘win’ regarding the right to protest during the Pope’s visit – see photos.

We would like to thank the following groups who donated items for the raffle:

In addition to the raffle, a traditional West Papuan painting framed by Philip Lim, was donated for auction.

Setel and Tekeste prepared tasty samosas which were very popular with the crowd throughout the night.

And last but not least, a big thanks to Bar 303 for providing the venue for our fundraiser.

The funds raised will help RAC to carry on the campaign. While there has been some positive news this week on some aspects of the detention policy, there is still a way to go before Australia has a truly humane policy on refugees and asylum seekers enshrined in law. So – see you next time !

Ensembles who performed on the night:

  • The Conch
  • Sam Starr and her hula hoops
  • Ali Coban
  • Ajak Kwai
  • La Kasbah
  • Pataphysics
  • and Rachel Evans with collection of Sydney T-shirts
Read this article in Sydney Morning Herald (4 July 2008) about the economics of the Rudd government "Indian Ocean Solution" – which replaces the Howard government Pacific Solution – and so on, and so on – which is why we had this fundraiser. The fight to end human rights abuse in Australia will go on for quite some time to come.
