Sri Lankans stateless on Nauru

Mr Richard Towle
Regional Representative
UNHCR
Australia

Dear Sir

An Appeal from Srilankan Refugees in Nauru

We received refugee status on 12th September 2007 and we are being kept in detention camp in Nauru. Yet we have not received any information about our resettlement. We are awaiting with great expectation.

We are kept in this island without any connectivity with the outer societies, organizations, humanitarians organizations or international media to convey our dilemma. It is very pathetic that there is no local media in Nauru island to make our condition known to others.

We were on hunger strike to express our plight to the Australian government and the people and international society. But we have not been released yet from the dangerous plight.

We were affected physically and mentally when we were in Sri Lanka. But now we are under immense physiologically pressure. We requested for asylum from the Australian government and the Australian people who rescued us. The Australian government accepted us as refugees in accordance with international refugee Law. But now the Australian government refuses to resettle us in Australia. This is disappointing us and put us on mental agony.

Two of our colleagues were accepted as refugees as six months ago by UNHCR. But they have not been resettled yet and this situation creates more fear and hesitation.

We anticipate from UNHCR to put pressure on government to resettle us as soon as possible.

We would like to request you as a representative of UNHCR to visit us to understand and study the plight of all the refugees at Nauru. We hope your visit would provide as a chance to explain our situation to you directly.

We anticipate your favorable reply in this concern.

Thank you.

Yours Sincerely,
Undersigned are the Srilankan Refugees, Nauru Migrant Center
