response to the Palmer report
14 July 2005

Refugee Action Collective of Victoria responded today to the Palmer enquiry into the wrongful detention of Cornelia Rau.

"This scandal highlights the injustice endemic to the government's policy of mandatory detention", said RAC spokesperson Kalinda Ashton.

"The only way of preventing further abuses of human rights and providing real justice is to put an end to this barbaric system"

"The Palmer report is merely a whitewash of the issues and its recommendations are grossly inadequate. Amanda Vandstone should resign."

RAC will continue to campaign for an end to mandatory detention, permanent protection for asylum seekers, the camps to be closed immediately and the release of all detainees.

A rally has been called for the anniversary of the Tampa incident demanding "freedom and full rights for all refugees" on Friday 26th of August at 5pm.
